High representative says Bosnia doesn't need new international conference

SARAJEVO, Aug 8 (Hina) - The international community's High Representative for Bosnia-Herzegovina, Christian Schwartz-Schilling, has said it is not necessary to hold a new international conference for Bosnia, adding that he did not support Croatian Prime Minister Ivo Sanader's recent proposal regarding a new conference.

I don't think that an international conference is necessary at all, the high representative said in an interview for Sarajevo-based daily Dnevni Avaz published on Tuesday. The problems that this country has can me solved by local politicians or with the support of the international community, he said. Of course, situations like this require good communication with neighbours, Schwartz-Schilling told the daily.

The German diplomat said that Croatian PM Sanader had not proposed the holding of an international conference at their last three or four meetings.

Commenting on the general situation in Bosnia, the high representative said that the decision on shutting down his office in mid 2007 was not a definite one, adding hat the final decision would be adopted in February and that it would also depend on the results of elections scheduled for 1 October.

The German diplomat stressed he would not allow the holding of a referendum proposed by Republika Srpska Prime Minister Milorad Dodik, who advocates the separation of the Serb entity from Bosnia-Herzegovina.
