The HNV said in a statement the future of the region must be built on unity, tolerance and European values, while such incidents distanced everyone from normal life.
The HNV also "fully supports the Serb People's Council in Croatia (SNV), as the official representative of Serbs in Croatia, wishing that the HNV and the SNV further develop and intensify cooperation to the benefit of both peoples and both states".
The incident was also condemned by former Serbia and Montenegro Ambassador to Zagreb Milan Simurdic, who said the reason for such excesses was "the deep animosity from the time of the war".
He wrote in Novi Sad's Dnevnik daily the reasons could also stem from opposition to progress in Serbia-Croatia relations and messages from frequent and successful visits on the highest level, such as Croatian Prime Minister Ivo Sanader's to Serbia last week.
The incident occurred in the early morning hours of Wednesday in Biljani Donji, a village in the Zadar hinterland, as four Serb returnees' houses were stoned and a fire was set in one yard. The firefighters and the police intervened swiftly and four perpetrators were arrested.
