"I think that (compared to existing solutions) one should go a step further. I have confidence in the prime minister and the president that an even better solution will be found to this issue," said Sanader.
He also said he was satisfied with the development of Croatia-Serbia relations, including the "treatment of minorities".
"This Serbian government has done a lot on that front and I think we are going in the right direction," Sanader said.
The meeting with local Croats was preceded by a closed-door meeting with representatives of the Croatian National Council and the Democratic League of Croats in Vojvodina.
League president Petar Kuntic described the meeting as historic and said there were announcements that the Croatian community's outstanding issues would be tackled.
Sanader was the first Croatian prime minister who visited the Croat minority in its cultural, educational and political headquarters in Subotica.
According to the latest census, there are about 16,000 Croats in Subotica and a total 76,000 throughout Serbia.
