EUFOR commander says Karadzic, Mladic not in Bosnia

ZAGREB, July 21 (Hina) - The commander of the EU Force in Bosnia-Herzegovina (EUFOR), Italian Major General Gian Marco Chiarini, told a Bosnian daily on Friday that the two most wanted war crimes suspects, Radovan Karadzic and Ratko Mladic, were not in Bosnia.

If they were in Bosnia, I'm sure we would know about it, Chiarini said, adding that EURFOR was ready to arrest not only Karadzic and Mladic but other ICTY indictees as well.

Chiarini's statement came following a recent claim by ICTY chief prosecutor Carla del Ponte who said that the international community did not want to see the two men arrested.

On arriving in Srebrenica, on 11 July del Ponte said she had come to pay tribute to the victims and meet the survivors, expressing regret that those most responsible for the massacre -- Bosnian Serb wartime political leader Karadzic and his military commander Mladic -- were still at large. She accused international organisations of avoiding to arrest the two war crimes suspects.
