A former assistant interior minister, Zeljko Tomljanovic, and a volunteer, Vjenceslav Bill, who fought in Osijek at the start of the Homeland War, were questioned about alleged war crimes with which the suspects are charged.
Glavas, a member of parliament and local power-monger in Osijek, and Krunoslav Fehir are believed to have perpetrated war crimes against civilians in that eastern Croatian city in 1991.
During the questioning at the Zagreb County Court, witness Tomljanovic said that he could not speak about Glavas's tasks in the defence of Osijek, given that Glavas had not been employed with the Interior Ministry at that time. The so-called Branimirova Defence Battalion was neither part of the Interior Ministry, according to the witness.
Tomljanovic said that he had no knowledge about "the treatment of some Serb civilians" or if the then Secretariat for the People's Defence had taken over some powers from the police's remit.
Bill said that he had heard about the civilian victims in war-time Osijek but that he had never heard about any concrete case of abuse of victims in the building of the Defence Secretariat.
At the time when crimes were perpetrated, Glavas held the post of local secretary in charge of defence.
After today's questioning, Glavas, who attended the interviews, said he was satisfied with the course of the investigation, expressing belief that the testimonies of the two witnesses were to his benefit.
Prosecutor Visnja Loncar, who heads the prosecution's team in this case, also expressed satisfaction with today's interviews.
Judge Posavec scheduled the continuation of the questioning of witnesses for Thursday, 20 July, before the summer recess, when General Karl Gorinsek and Lieutenant Ivan Grujic are expected to give their testimonies.
The prosecution has proposed 45 witnesses.
Today, the first Croatian defence minister, General Martin Spegelj, was due to give his testimony, but he did not appear in the court.
