Opposition chief says corruption should be tackled by those steeped in it

ZAGREB, Jan 22 (Hina) - Social Democratic Party (SDP) leader Zoran Milanovic has said that corruption should be tackled by those who are steeped in it, adding that the next government, which he believes will be led by his party, will ensure that Croatian society and politics are free of corruption.

"We do not pledge a clampdown on corruption, because those who are responsible for it and for other evils should deal with it," Milanovic said on Saturday ahead of a meeting of the main committee of the SDP women's forum.

The SDP chief said that the anti-corruption campaign at the end of the government's term was actually the result of internal wrangling in the ruling Croatian Democratic Union.

He said his party would not be making big promises ahead of elections, but would only call for hard work on necessary changes in Croatia to make it better and stronger and to rid it of "everything it has been going through in recent years".

The SDP can only promise hard work, adoption of practicable laws and their enforcement, Milanovic said.
