HDZ leader says party successfully surmounting problems

ZAGREB, Dec 30 (Hina) - Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) leader and Prime Minister Jadranka Kosor has described 2010 as a tough year for her party, adding that it is most important for the HDZ that it has surmounted all problems and that the party leadership is united.

"We are aware of all the problems, we are aware that we are going through a really difficult and sensitive period for the party. I would not wish anybody to go through anything like this," Kosor said in the party's headquarters at a ceremony at which the HDZ gave a donation to the Ana Rukavina foundation.

All of this obviously had to happen, but it is most important that problems "are being surmounted step by step," she said in response to reporters' questions.

Kosor said she was proud of the HDZ's success in "widening the space in the legislative and every other sense for the fight against corruption, for the completion of the negotiations with the European Union and for economic recovery".

"Our duty is to see to it that the party is stable, not only for the elections in 2011 but also for all years to come and for all people who will lead the party in the future," the HDZ chief said.

She went on to say that as the strongest political party, the HDZ had "a special obligation towards each of its 220,000 members who honestly and honorably do their job."

Kosor said the party should keep remembering its tenets from the programme drawn up by the HDZ founder and first Croatian president, Franjo Tudjman.
