New 2011 year ushered in with open-air parties in Croatian cities

ZAGREB, Jan 1 (Hina) - During New Year Eve on Friday, cities throughout Croatia organised open-air New Year parties with many people packing main city squares and streets on this occasion. The new 2011 was ushered in with firework displays and waltz melodies.

Braving a cold and chilly evening, many residents of the capital of Zagreb gathered in Trg Bana Jelacic Square where concerts and a rich firework show were being held. Taking a walk through the city centre, President Ivo Josipovic joined the revellers.

Residents of the biggest Croatian Adriatic city of Split packed the Riva waterfront walkway with local pop stars taking part in an entertainment programme. An exhibition of photos was staged in the city's Fotoklub that is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year.

As usual, the Korzo main street was the venue of an open-air New Year celebration in the northern coastal city of Rijeka. Local bands and singers entertained people flocking to Korzo.

Residents of the eastern city of Osijek flocked to the main square for an outdoor New Year's Eve party. Local folk bands played and cooked wine was offered to revellers. A total of HRK 130,000 was allocated from the local government budget for this revelry.

Residents of Dubrovnik and tourists in that southern Craotian resort, ushered in 2011 at an open-air party in Stradun. Also nine hotels in this coastal city organised New Year parties.
