Croatia's EU entry negotiations to be stepped up in year's second half - Sanader

BRUSSELS, June 15 (Hina) - Croatian Prime Minister Ivo Sanader said in Brussels on Thursday he expected the process of negotiations with the European Union to be significantly accelerated in the second half of the year.
BRUSSELS, June 15 (Hina) - Croatian Prime Minister Ivo Sanader said in Brussels on Thursday he expected the process of negotiations with the European Union to be significantly accelerated in the second half of the year.

"I expect a very fast and dynamic process during the Finnish presidency," he said after talks with Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn.

Earlier today Sanader attended a meeting of European People's Party leaders and held numerous bilateral meetings, including with European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso.

"I am extremely satisfied with the two meetings at which we discussed institutional possibilities of Croatia's admission after the completion of (EU entry) negotiations," said Sanader.

Given that the Nice Agreement was designed for 27 member states, Croatia's accession as the 28th will require either the adoption of the European constitution or an amendment to the Nice Agreement.

"There are no doubts that regardless of the problems with the European constitution, Croatia will become the EU's 28th member."

Sanader announced that Croatia's chief EU entry negotiator Vladimir Drobnjak would soon travel to Finland, which takes over the EU's six-month rotating presidency on July 1, to discuss further steps.
