EPP supports Croatia's EU entry, separating negotiations for Croatia, Turkey - Sanader

BRUSSELS, June 15 (Hina) - European People's Party leaders support Croatia's membership of the European Union and the separation of the negotiating processes for Croatia and Turkey, Croatian Prime Minister Ivo Sanader said in Meise on Thursday.
BRUSSELS, June 15 (Hina) - European People's Party leaders support Croatia's membership of the European Union and the separation of the negotiating processes for Croatia and Turkey, Croatian Prime Minister Ivo Sanader said in Meise on Thursday.

Sanader, who is also the president of the ruling Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ), attended a meeting of the leaders of the EPP, the umbrella organisation of Europe's Democratic Christian and People's parties. Such meetings are held ahead of every EU summit.

The Meise meeting focused on the EU's institutional problems in connection with further enlargement, one of the topics of the EU summit this afternoon.

"All the participants in the discussion underlined that the EU will have 28 members, which means they include Croatia. The majority said there will be no problems for Croatia," Sanader said.

He added the institutional problem could be solved "either with an amendment to the Nice Agreement or some other way so that Croatia can join, obviously once it meets all the conditions".

The Nice Agreement is designed for 27 member countries and this figure will be complete with the accession of Bulgaria and Romania. The agreement is expected to be replaced with the European constitution, whose ratification came to a standstill after voters in France and the Netherlands rejected it at referendums.

Sanader said he held numerous bilateral meetings in Meise and that they confirmed support for the principle under which every country should be evaluated on the basis of its own merits in the process of accession to the EU.

Sanader also met European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso. The talks focused on problems in connection with the European constitution. Sanader said he agreed with Barroso that the constitution should be adopted, with possible amendments, by 2009 at the latest.

The Meise meeting was attended by Barroso and Prime Ministers Angela Merkel of Germany, Jan-Peter Balkenende of the Netherlands, Kostas Karamanlis of Greece, Wolfgang Schuessel of Austria, Jean-Claude Juncker of Luxembourg, Lawrence Gonzi of Malta, Janez Jansa of Slovenia, and Aigars Kaltivitis of Latvia.
