Parliamentary opposition critical of draft health strategy

ZAGREB, June 6 (Hina) - The parliamentary opposition said during Tuesday's debate on a national health sector development strategy over the next five years that given the low living standards it was not realistic to plan a higher participation by the public in covering health costs.
ZAGREB, June 6 (Hina) - The parliamentary opposition said during Tuesday's debate on a national health sector development strategy over the next five years that given the low living standards it was not realistic to plan a higher participation by the public in covering health costs.

Slavko Linic of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) said higher investment in the health sector was possible only if GDP, the economic growth rate, salaries and pensions were increased.

The SDP said the government, which moved the strategy, provided in the document a critical analysis of the health sector only in the 2000-03 period, when an SDP-led coalition was in power, while not mentioning the problems in the last three years.

Pero Kovacevic of the Party of Rights (HSP) said the strategy planned only to save and reduce health services instead of improving the situation in the sector.

Stjepan Bacic of the ruling Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) said the copayment model in the health sector existed in nearly every European state and that Croatia could not run away from the requirement that its citizens participate more in covering health costs.

Parliament today began a debate on a final sports bill whereby the government wishes to regulate the situation in both professional and amateur sports.

Only the SDP club of deputies took part in the debate because parliament adjourned the session until tomorrow.
