ZAGREB, June 2 (Hina) - An international conference on the prevention of trafficking in women in transition countries opened in Zagreb on Friday.

According to the International Organisation for Migration, every year four million people are victims of human trafficking.

Forty-seven victims of human trafficking, most of them women, have been identified in Croatia since 2002, said the head of the Croatian government office for human rights, Luka Madjeric.

He said that most of the victims were nationals of Southeast European countries and 30 per cent were Croatian citizens. The average age of the victims was 21.5 years.

The conference was organised by the European Women's Lobby, the Coalition against Trafficking in Women, the Centre for Women Victims of War and the Centre for Women's Studies.
