Croatia is really making very fast progress towards membership of the European Union, Reding said in a statement for the press, expressing satisfaction with the progress of talks on Croatia's EU membership bid.
Speaking about the information society, Reding said that the information society was very important for open markets and competition and that citizens would benefit from new technologies. This is what the "e-Croatia" project is all about, she said, adding that this was an important step in the right direction.
As for the media, it is extremely important that the media are independent and free, the EU official said.
Sanader told reporters that he and Reding also agreed that it was very important to strengthen independent regulatory bodies such as the Council for Telecommunications.
Sanader and Reding also discussed problems currently bothering the EU, such as the issue of the EU constitution and enlargement fatigue.
"We agreed that Croatia's negotiating framework, which was adopted by the European Commission and later by the EU Council of Ministers, very clearly states that the purpose of the talks with Croatia is full membership of the European Union," Sanader said.
"We definitely want problems with the European constitution to be solved as soon as possible. The sooner they are solved the better the situation for both the member countries and the negotiating countries," Sanader said.
Commenting on enlargement fatigue, Sanader said: "It is up to us to bring Europe closer to European citizens, and this goes not only for Croatia but for EU member-countries as well."
The PM announced that explanatory screening for the chapter on the information society and the media would be held on 12 and 13 June, while bilateral screening would be held on 17 and 18 July.
