WASHINGTON, May 24 (Hina) - The United States called on the
peoples and leaders of Montenegro and Serbia on Tuesday to cooperate so as to
implement the decision on independence the people of Montenegro made at a
referendum on Sunday. Speaking to the press, State Department
spokesman Sean McCormack commended the peaceful, democratic and transparent way
in which the referendum was held and said the U.S. assessed that the vote had
been free and fair.
Asked if it was good that a new state was being born in the region,
McCormack said this was a political solution to what had been a difficult issue
for the people of the region.
