Beta news agency quoted Polt as saying in an embassy statement that the referendum was peaceful, democratic and transparent, and that the people and the leaders of both sides, those who wanted independence and those who were against it, had showed political maturity in a historic opportunity.
The statement said the United States fully supported the estimate of the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions that the referendum was held in line with OSCE and Council of Europe regulations as well as international standards.
The U.S. is determined to support efforts in the region which will achieve President George W. Bush's goal for Europe to be free, peaceful and integral, said the statement.
Speaking to the press, Polt said Montenegro and Serbia could join Euro-Atlantic institutions together, as partners, although they are independent. He underlined the importance of Euro-Atlantic integration for both states.
Polt said the U.S. would take a position on Montenegro once independence was formally declared and Belgrade and Podgorica established the framework of talks on future relations.
