SPLIT, May 17 (Hina) - The USS Enterprise anchored one nautical
mile off the southern Croatian port city of Split on Wednesday morning ahead of
a ceremony on Thursday at which a Congressional Medal of Honour would be
presented to the descendants of Peter Tomich, an American sailor of Croatian
origin who saved a ship's crew during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in
1941. The USS Enterprise is the longest and oldest US Navy aircraft
carrier which has been in commission since 1961. It is 340 metres long and 40.5

some 5,000 crew members and can carry 85 aircraft.
The Croatian Navy will arrange a reception for the ship's captain and
his aides, and the guests will also be received by local government officials.
Croatian Defence Minister Berislav Roncevic is scheduled to visit the ship this
afternoon.
