The Damar agency, whose surveys are considered quite reliable, based its findings on the survey conducted in mid-April in nine Montenegrin towns, covering 1,000 respondents.
Asked about the main reasons why they would vote for independence, 40% cited the economy, 36.1% cited historical reasons, 5.1% political reasons, 4.7% social reasons, 4.4% security and 9.7% cited all of the above mentioned reasons.
As for reasons against independence, 26.8% cited history, 26.6% cited the economy, 22.7% cited security reasons, 7.3% social and 5.4% political reasons, and 11.2% all of the above mentioned reasons.
Most respondents, 29.3%, would vote for the Democratic Party of Socialists of Prime Minister Milo Djukanovic. The party is followed by the Socialist People's Party with 9.8% and the Group for Changes with 9.7% of votes.
The referendum on Montenegro's independence is scheduled to take place on May 21. Two opposed blocs - one seeking independence and the other advocating unity with Serbia - have been conducting an intensive campaign in an attempt to win the most of the 20 percent of still undecided voters.
