After the ceremony, a pastoral letter from the head of the Serb Orthodox Church, Patriarch Pavle, was read out.
In the letter, Patriarch Pavle called for praying for peace among the faithful in Kosovo and Metohija through the mutual understanding of the Serbian and Albanian communities, with the application of generally accepted principles which guarantee life, peace, freedom and dignity for every man.
The Patriarch called on the faithful in Kosovo and Metohija to stay there regardless of all the threats coming from people blinded with hate.
He also called for the unity of the Church in Montenegro, urging the faithful there to preserve peace and harmony before and after the upcoming referendum on independence.
"Freedom and the common human and brotherly good cannot be built anywhere, and certainly not in... Montenegro, with pressure on human conscience, bribery and by spreading fear, but with free expression, with full responsibility for the future of one's descendants," read the letter.
In attendance were also Zagreb Mayor Milan Bandic and representatives of the Russian and Greek Embassies.
Orthodox Easter was also celebrated in Osijek and Dubrovnik.
