Mesic said that Croatia needed a well-trained army in order to achieve NATO standards and that the Training Centre in Sinj provided the necessary level of training for accomplishing that goal.
"Croatia must have an army capable of responding to all contemporary challenges and compatible with NATO member countries," he said.
The President said he was satisfied with the accommodation and training facilities for soldiers, but raised concerns over the age of the vehicle fleet, saying that more should be done in that domain in order to ensure road safety.
Mesic said that many military facilities no longer used by the armed forces would be given for public use, but stressed that the Training Centre in Sinj would remain a military facility.
Mesic also met local civilian authorities for talks on the state of the local economy. Mayor Nikola Tomasevic and his aides spoke of administrative barriers to investment and the need to create new jobs.
