KARLOVAC, March 23 (Hina) - Asked if new draft legal provisions would give excessive powers to secret services, Croatian President Stjepan Mesic said on Thursday that the new provisions which he agreed with Prime Minister Ivo Sanader and leaders of opposition parties were in line with EU regulations and expressed hope parliament would adopt them.

The president told Hina he and the PM agreed this morning that the state should not sell its 18 percent of shares in the Pliva pharmaceutical company at present. The state should remain the owner of those shares until a better solution is found, the president said.

Commenting on the offer of Iceland's Actavis company, Mesic said he did not believe that Iceland could allocate billions for that purpose and purchase Pliva shares.

The question is where does it all lead, perhaps production would be transferred abroad, Mesic said.

Asked if it was true that Llulzim Krasniqi, who was assassinated last night, had financed his presidential campaign and visited the President's Office in 2001 Mesic said: "It is possible that this person visited my office, possibly alone and possibly in a group, but this is the first time I hear about this person". Mesic resolutely declined that Krasniqi financed his presidential campaign.
