ZAGREB, Jan 27 (Hina) - The Croatian-Israeli Society and the association Bet Israel held a Holocaust Remembrance Day commemoration in Zagreb on Friday.

Among the guests at the event were Croatian President Stjepan Mesic and Israeli Ambassador to Croatia Shmuel Meirom.

The commemoration started with a programme performed by the mixed choir "Lira", which has been performing Jewish and Croatian songs for more than 50 years.

The president of the Croatian-Jewish Society and choir leader Mihael Montiljo suggested that everyone should join in the project of reconstruction of the Zagreb Synagogue, following the good example of Germany.

The Holocaust and its victims must not be forgotten and education is the best way to achieve it, Montiljo said, adding that Croatia should mobilise all forces to become a model of coexistence and tolerance.

Rabbi Kotel Da-Don, historian Ivo Goldstein and journalist Jasminka Domas spoke about the Holocaust.

Rabbi Da-Don, who said a prayer for the dead, expressed satisfaction with the fact that synagogues in Croatia were being rebuilt, adding that he had attended one such event in Rijeka on Thursday.

The experience of the Holocaust should be a universal message against racism of any kind, which today is directed against Muslims in Europe and black people in the United States, he said, adding that Jews should lead the fight against racism.

Historian Goldstein said that between 75 and 80 percent of the Jewish community in Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina was killed during World War II.
