BUDAPEST, Jan 26 (Hina) - Croatian-Hungarian cooperation may be an example to Southeast European countries and the wider region and the two countries wish to build the future on cooperation and friendship which will bring prosperity to both peoples, their prime ministers said in Budapest on Thursday.

Speaking to the press after the first closed-door session of the two governments, Ivo Sanader of Croatia and Ferenc Gyurcsany of Hungary said the two countries had no outstanding issues and cooperated in many areas.

Gyurcsany said Croatia and Hungary did not share only the past but also the future.

He underlined that Hungary saw Croatia as a European country and announced further support so that it could join the European Union and NATO in the shortest time possible.

Gyurcsany said that apart from ministerial agreements, there existed a framework agreement between the two governments on how Hungary will support Croatia so that it could join the EU as soon as possible.

The two prime ministers today signed a statement on Croatia-Hungary cooperation in united Europe and a declaration on energy cooperation.

The latter supports the construction of a joint transmission line between Ernestinovo and Pecs, the linking of the two countries' gas supply systems near Donji Miholjac, Croatia, and the drafting of a study on transport of liquefied petroleum gas from the Adriatic to Central Europe.

Croatia, and I believe Hungary, too, will do everything to be independent in terms of energy, said Sanader.

He added Croatia had decided to build an LNG terminal in the Adriatic and that the Gas Supply Commission would discuss it next week. He underlined that Croatia was interested in an alternative gas supply route through Hungary.

The two governments fully supported joint organisation of the 2012 European Soccer Championships.

Preparations are going well and organising the event would mean a lot to both countries as well as the united Europe project, said Sanader.

Gyurcsany said the championships would also help infrastructure projects, adding that there was a wish to complete the Budapest-Ploce highway by 2010, a road and a bridge across the Mura by 2007, as well as rail and airport projects.

The two prime ministers could not say how much Croatia and Hungary would have to invest in organising the sporting event, but Sanader said the return would be tenfold, with estimates that the renovation of stadiums in Zagreb, Split, Rijeka and Osijek and other accompanying activities would employ some 40,000 people.

Members of the two governments also discussed border cooperation, economic and infrastructure cooperation, cooperation in the protection of minorities, culture and education, and environmental protection.

A number of bilateral documents was signed, including letters of intent on minorities and cooperation in a joint approach to national development and the regional policy.

Today's session with the Hungarian government was the first the Croatian government held abroad and the second it held with another government. The first was held with Slovenia in mid-2005.
