VUKOVAR, Jan 22 (Hina) - A sustainable development strategy for the river port of Vukovar was recently presented in that eastern Croatian city.

The document was presented by Hans Peter Dohr, on behalf of the German Dohr Capital company, assessing that the river traffic along the Danube could be increased with higher investments.

Authors of the study assess that by 2015 the port could start reloading 2.5 million tonnes of various cargo annually, and even six million tonnes of cargo could be transshipped annually until 2035.

Some 60 million euros should be invested in the port over next 20 years for this purpose.

On that occasion, Croatian Transport and Development Minister Bozidar Kalmeta said the authorities were planning to invest 25 million euros in the enlargement of the Vukovar river port over the next five years.

Of this amount, the Croatian government would ensure 15 million, and the rest of 10 million by the port authorities.

The minister also announced the start of the construction of a 60-kilometre-long Danube-Sava canal.

This government will start the building of the Danube-Sava canal, a project important not only for (the area of) Slavonia but also for Croatia, Kalmeta said adding that according to first estimates, about 4.5 billion kuna (608 million euros) would be necessary for this purpose.

During the visit of Minister Kalmeta and German businessmen, the VTS centre for monitoring boats was officially opened in the Vukovar river port which also got a new lighting network, worth 550,000 kuna.
