UN administrator calls urgent session of local Kosovo leaders after President Rugova dies

PRISTINA, Jan 21 (Hina) - The UN Civil Administrator in Kosovo, Soren Jessen-Petersen, convened an urgent session of local leaders after it was reported that Kosovo President Ibrahim Rugova died in his residence in Pristina on Saturday.

Local Self-Government Minister Lufti Haziri informed local media of the death of the 61-year-old president.

In September 2005, Rugova was diagnosed with lung cancer.

His death comes just days before the scheduled start of UN-sponsored negotiations between Kosovo and Serbian officials on the final status of this UN- administered province.
