CAKOVEC, Jan 9 (Hina) - The northern Croatian county of Medjimurje on Monday marked Memorial Day of Medjimurje's Secession from Hungary.

On 9 January 1919 a people's assembly held a meeting in Cakovec, deciding that Medjimurje should be reintegrated with Croatia.

The commemorations marking this Memorial Day were held on Monday in Cakovec's main square under the auspices of the Croatian parliament.

This is the first time that this Memorial Day is marked in Croatia since the Sabor adopted a decision declaring 9 January as memorial day marking Medjimurje's secession from Hungary.

The Croatian parliament has also decided to declare another four memorial days: one marking international recognition of the Republic of Croatia (15 January), one in tribute to Croatian victims in the struggle for freedom and independence (Sunday closest to 15 May), Croatian Sabor Memorial Day (30 May), and memorial marking the reintegration of the peninsula of Istria, the coastal cities of Rijeka and Zadar and islands with the mainland of Croatia (25 September).

Memorial days are not bank holidays.
