The handover of the base called Orao (Eagle) was performed in the presence of the members of Bosnia' state Presidency and the commander of the US National Guard, General Steven Blum.
An agreement on the handover was signed by US Ambassador to Bosnia Douglas McElhaney and Bosnian Defence Minister Selmo Cikotic.
"This confirms that after reforming the defence sector, Bosnia and Herzegovina can take care of its own security," said Presidency chairman Nebojsa Radmanovic.
After the Dayton peace agreement was signed in 1995, the US sent more than 20,000 troops to Bosnia within the IFOR and SFOR missions. Orao was their base. The US government invested considerable funds in the Dubrave airport near Tuzla so that the largest transport aircraft could land there.
