Answering reporters' questions during an official visit to Cyprus on Thursday, Mesic said that Zagorec had asked that the president's advisor on national security and the State Prosecutor's Office join in the investigation into his case so that he could "submit some documents" to Croatian authorities.
"The meeting did take place, but I have no knowledge of other details," Mesic said.
Croatian newspapers today reported that Mesic's advisor Sasa Perkovic had held secret talks with Zagorec in Vienna on May 25, with the knowledge and permission of Chief State Prosecutor Mladen Bajic. That piece of information, unknown to the public until now, was disclosed by Zagorec's Austrian attorney at a hearing at the Vienna District Court on Wednesday, at which a decision was to have been made on the request for Zagorec's extradition. The decision was postponed due to new evidence submitted by the general's defence and a new hearing was scheduled for July 25.
Some media speculate that Zagorec intended to offer Mesic's advisor documents and information in exchange for a privilege or a more lenient punishment, while others believe that Perkovic's visit to Vienna was probably linked with the investigation into the whereabouts of state money, about which Zagorec could have reliable information.
No information about the meeting between Perkovic and Zagorec could be obtained from the State Prosecutor's Office today.
