The talks focused on the communication strategy for Croatia's accession to NATO and the role of parliamentary deputies in that process. Babst informed the Croatian MPs about the issues she encountered during her visit to Croatia.
She said that she was satisfied that Croatian authorities had chosen to provide citizens with information about NATO, rather than to advertise the alliance in order to increase public support for NATO membership. In this way, citizens can get a much better picture of the alliance itself and the importance of NATO membership, she added.
Cosic underlined the need to provide more information on the various potentials of NATO, notably in the area of education, security and humanitarian rescue operations.
Also discussed at the meeting was the question of referendum on accession to NATO and consensus among parliamentary parties on that strategic issue. Babst thanked Croatia for its participation in NATO-led peace missions, notably the one in Afghanistan.
