ZAGREB, June 21 (Hina) - The Croatian and Slovene prime ministers confirmed in Meise on Thursday that they discussed a wiretapping scandal which has made a splash in Slovenia and which has had powerful reverberations in Croatia as well.

Speaking to reporters after a meeting of the leaders of the European People's Party (EPP), Slovene Prime Minister Janez Jansa said that his Croatian counterpart Ivo Sanader had asked him when he would answer a note sent recently by the Croatian government regarding claims that the Slovene secret service had wiretapped former Slovene Opposition leaders, as well as persons with whom they spoke, including Croatian PM Sanader.

Sanader said that "it is clear, although the investigation is still under way, that Jansa was wiretapped at the time when he was an Opposition leader, and that those with whom he spoke were wiretapped as well."

He added that Croatia would know how to respond if it was established that the former Slovene government "intentionally wiretapped foreign nationals and a foreign prime minister".

Both officials dismissed claims by former Slovene prime minister Anton Rop that Jansa and Sanader had arranged incidents in Piran Bay to help Jansa win elections, calling them ridiculous.
