Ex-Slovene PM says incumbent Croatian, Slovene premiers arranged border incidents

LJUBLJANA, June 18 (Hina) - Former Slovene Prime Minister Anton Rop said on Sunday that in 2004 Slovenia's intelligence wiretapped Croatian PM Ivo Sanader's telephone conversations with incumbent Slovene PM Janez Jansa, at the time the leader of Slovenia's opposition, over incidents in the border Piran Bay in the northern Adriatic, and that Sanader and Jansa agreed those incidents.

Speaking on state television, Rop said the target of the tapping was not Jansa and that the tapping revealed the existence of an "agreement" between "the Slovene and the Croatian side" with regard to the incidents. At the time, Jansa was the leader of the opposition that won a relative majority in parliament at elections in the autumn of 2004.

"The Croatian government gave directives when an incident should occur, immediately before elections. Jansa and Sanader agreed when incidents in Piran Bay would occur," said Rop.

On Saturday, the Slovene daily Dnevnik cited "unofficial but reliable" information from the SOVA intelligence agency saying that in the election year 2004 it taped a number of conversations between Jansa and Sanader, and that the target was not Jansa but the Croatian leadership over outstanding issues between the two countries.

Jansa did not attach much importance to the allegation on Saturday but said that it would be "an outrageous scandal" if the information was correct.

Sanader said the same day he did not believe that Slovene intelligence had been wiretapping him, but if the conversations had been tapped, Jansa was the likelier target. He also said that Rop should explain the allegations.
