SDP leader Milanovic comments on anti-corruption operation

ZAGREB, June 20 (Hina) - Social Democratic Party (SDP) leader Zoran Milanovic on Wednesday commented on a meeting of the National Security Council (VNS) held earlier in the day and answered a reporter's question if he was afraid that a name of an SDP member could crop up in the ongoing investigation into a recent corruption scandal in the Croatian Privatisation Fund (HFP).

"The distribution of tasks was clear in the last spectacular operation of the Office for the Suppression of Corruption and Organised Crime (USKOK) and the State Prosecutor's Office, which I congratulate on efficiency and a job well done," Milanovic said.

Milanovic said that the VNS meeting was a meeting of the state leadership that was attended by the president of the Supreme Court, which he found unusual.

He went on to say that the government, the prime minister, the president of the state and political parties were not directly connected with the operation.

"Three persons are in prison, they are adherents of the Croatian Democratic Union and were appointed by it, and we once again call for establishing political responsibility," Milanovic said.

"This country must finally understand what political responsibility is, that is what Prime Minister Ivo Sanader does not understand," he added.

"(Sanader) speaks about spectacular operations, one day he does not know what exactly is going on, the other day he knows exactly what is going on. I urge him to state clearly what he learned and when he learned it, or since when he had known about the operation, because this raises the issue of the basic conflict of interest," Milanovic said.

Congratulating once again USKOK and the State Prosecutor's Office, Milanovic said: "Whatever they do, they will have our support. Whoever is found to be responsible is responsible."
