HNS officials said this would be their political answer to the corruption scandal in the Croatian Privatisation Fund (HFP).
The Croatian State Prosecutor's Office, the Office for the Suppression of Corruption and Organised Crime (USKOK), and the police on Saturday successfully ended one of the most spectacular operations, Operation Maestro, namely an investigation into embezzlement and abuse of position in the Croatian Privatisation Fund.
Six people were arrested, including three HFP vice presidents.
They are suspected, among other things, of creating conditions on the stock exchange under which they later bought shares and of committing fraud with state-owned real estate put at the HFP's disposal.
According to previous agreements with investors, they estimated the value of the real state at a lower price or defined prices at bids in accordance with individual investors' wishes
HNS president Vesna Pusic told a news conference on Sunday that yesterday's arrests showed that corruption reached top government officials. She said it was unacceptable for the HNS that only low ranking officials were being held responsible.
The president of the HNS Main Committee, Radimir Cacic said that government members must have known about corruption in the Privatisation Fund as well as about other scandals in their resources.
