Kosovo team says new status negotiations unacceptable

PRISTINA, June 19 (Hina) - Any demand for resuming talks on Kosovo's status or a delay in the adoption of a Security Council resolution are unacceptable for Kosovo officials, a statement in Pristina said on Tuesday.
PRISTINA, June 19 (Hina) - Any demand for resuming talks on Kosovo's status or a delay in the adoption of a Security Council resolution are unacceptable for Kosovo officials, a statement in Pristina said on Tuesday.

It was issued after a meeting of the Kosovo negotiating team which considered the international community's latest proposals for the settlement of the Kosovo status issue.

Spokesman Skender Hyseni told the press the team had not received any official proposal on the delay or on new talks and would therefore not state its positions.

He said Kosovo negotiators could not accept new negotiations on the plan devised by UN mediator Martti Ahtisaari, which envisages internationally supervised independence, and that they demanded a swift adoption of a UN Security Council resolution based on Ahtisaari's plan because "one can't wait forever".

"Kosovo can be brought into a situation to settle its status in a different fashion. In that case, the countries which blocked the process in the Security Council would be responsible."

Hyseni also said the negotiating team dismissed any possibility of linking the settlement of Kosovo's status with the Hague tribunal's war crimes fugitives, as mentioned yesterday by chief prosecutor Carla del Ponte. She called for postponing a decision on Kosovo's status so as not to aggravate Belgrade's position and obstruct the arrest of the fugitives.
