KFOR to remain in Kosovo even after status decision

PRISTINA, June 3 (Hina) - Representatives of the peacekeeping Kosovo Force said on Sunday they would remain in Kosovo with the same mission for a minimum six months after a decision on the province's final status.

KFOR will stay in Kosovo for a transitional period, with the same mandate, number of troops and structure, said Colonel Michael Knop. He added NATO had decided that KFOR would stay during a 120-day transitional period and at least six months after that.

If the UN Security Council adopts a resolution based on mediator Martti Ahtisaari's plan for Kosovo, KFOR should remain in the province within a military mission envisaged in the plan.

However, Knop added that it was still not known if KFOR's mission would be changed. Everything depends on developments and political decisions, he said.

KFOR currently has a little over 16,000 troops in the southern Serbian province.
