Mesic on government's responsibility in Privatisation Fund corruption scandal

GOSPIC, June 19 (Hina) - President Stjepan Mesic said on Tuesday that the National Security Council, due to convene tomorrow, would consider what state mechanisms had done and what they still had to do.

Speaking to the press in Gospic, Mesic said the goal had been achieved to have all state mechanisms start functioning.

Asked if he would request that the government and its ministers be held accountable in the case of the Croatian Privatisation Fund, which saw eight HFP officials arrested for corruption, Mesic said it would not be good to take any action while the investigation was under way and that one should wait for the facts to establish who was guilty and how much.

If anyone from the government was implicated in any way, rest assured that the prime minister will have to take that into consideration, Mesic said.

Regarding those pointing the finger at Deputy PM Damir Polancec, Mesic said that "those defending themselves to make it easier on themselves have to shift a little burden onto others".

Commenting on a letter from the Simon Wiesenthal Centre requesting that a concert by ultranationalist singer Thompson in Zagreb be banned, Mesic said he could not ban anyone's concert. He added, however, that a place glorifying the Ustasha ideology was a place heading in the wrong direction.
