Posselt says Croatia must join EU this decade

KARLOVAC, June 16 (Hina) - A member of the European Parliament and a delegation of the EU-Croatia Joint Parliamentary Committee, Bernd Posselt, said on Saturday Croatia was the only country that must join the European Union this decade.

As a Central European country it is already fully ready and with regard to the population it will not pose a capacity problem for EU enlargement, Posselt said in Karlovac, 50 southwest of Zagreb.

He said Croatia should work on opening further to EU countries as well as on information and underlined the importance of cross-border cooperation with Bosnia and Herzegovina, Slovenia and other countries in the region.

Posselt, on a regular visit to Croatia as part of the Joint Parliamentary Committee delegation, commended the Ivo Sanader Cabinet, but said that in the European Parliament as well as in any country's parliament, including Croatia, there were various individual interests, even unfair ones, that obstructed Croatia's integration process.

There are members of the European Parliament who feel the EU should not take on new members as well as those who, not knowing the truth, consider Croatia responsible for the disintegration of the former Yugoslavia and an undeveloped Balkan country, Posselt said, adding that such scepticism must disappear in contact with Croatia.

Local officials briefed him about Karlovac County's activities in international organisations and about projects aimed at drawing money from EU pre-accession funds.

Tomorrow, Posselt is due to give a talk in Zagreb.
