TIH president Zorislav Antun Petrovic said a a round table discussion on the financing of political parties and election campaign, organised by this nongovernmental organisation, that only about 21 percent of citizens believed that parties would finance election campaigns in accordance with the law on the financing of political parties.
Representatives of parliamentary parties expressed different positions on the said law.
The president of the Parliamentary Committee on the Constitution, Rule Book and Political System, Drazen Boznjakovic of the ruling Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ), said that the existing law was fair and that it provided good framework standards for a transparent elections campaign.
Josip Leko of the Social Democrats (SDP), however, expressed dissatisfaction with the fact that the law left a possibility for private companies to finance political parties, regardless of their unpaid taxes and contributions. He believed that Croatia had not yet develop a political will to regulate the issue of financing the political parties.
