French President Nicholas Sarkozy said on Thursday in the German Baltic resort of Heiligendamm, the venue of the G8 summit, he had proposed a six-month delay for further discussions on the future status of Kosovo. Sarkozy believed this was a compromise solution considering Russia's opposition to Kosovo's independence and the support of Western countries to UN envoy Martti Ahtisaari's plan for the supervised independence of the southern Serbian province.
Kosovo President Fatmir Sejdiu said today that he was against any delay and that Kosovo could not be a hostage to the threat of Russia vetoing a final decision on Kosovo's status in the Security Council.
"We are determined to see Kosovo gain independence and we want the process of adoption of a new UN resolution on Kosovo to be accelerated," Sejdiu said.
"We cannot wait forever. Our frustrations are growing. We have been patient because we trust the international community. Don't betray our trust," Prime Minister Agim Ceku said.
