A state secretary in the Central Administration Office Antun Polaric said a referendum would be called by a local representation body, if a local leader was not not performing his duties in accordance with the law or was causing serious material damage to his local self-government unit.
Referendum would be valid if at least 33 percent of the registered voters went to the polls.
A referendum could be initiated by citizens, if they collect the signatures of 33 percent of the electorate. A representation body would then be in charge of calling a referendum. A referendum could be called six months after the election of the local leader, while at least 12 months must go by between two referendums.
Parliamentary deputies are now discussing the government-sponsored amendments.
