ZAGREB, May 3 (Hina) - The Croatian Parliament held a commemorative session on Thursday in tribute to Ivica Racan, a former prime minister and Social Democratic Party member of Parliament who sat in all five parliaments. Racan died of cancer last weekend, aged 63.

The session was opened by Parliament President Vladimir Seks after the playing of the national anthem and a minute of silence.

In his remarks, Seks put particular emphasis on Racan's role in the drafting of the first Constitution of Croatia as an independent state, when Racan chaired the Commission for Constitutional Affairs.

Seks said that Racan left a great mark on the social provisions of the Constitution, which guarantee the right to work, social security, health care, and special care for the disabled.

The session was also addressed by Parliament Vice-Presidents Mato Arlovic and Vesna Pusic.

Along with members of Parliament, the session was attended by Racan's family, Prime Minister Ivo Sanader and members of the government, religious dignitaries, and representatives of the diplomatic corps.

Also attending were members of the former, Racan-led government, who signed a book of condolence opened in the Parliament.
