'COAST' project for sustainable economic development to be carried in Dalmatia

SPLIT, May 13 (Hina) - The long-term project called COAST aimed at ensuring sustainable economic development of Croatia's Adriatic in the sectors of fisheries, tourist trade and agriculture with the protection of the environment was inaugurated last week at a workshop in Split.
SPLIT, May 13 (Hina) - The long-term project called COAST aimed at ensuring sustainable economic development of Croatia's Adriatic in the sectors of fisheries, tourist trade and agriculture with the protection of the environment was inaugurated last week at a workshop in Split.

The project will be carried out at four locations: the peninsula of Peljesac, Malostonski Bay and the island of Mljet as one area, the island of Vis and nearby islets, the mouth of the Krka River in the Adriatic and the fourth area is the northwestern part of Zadar County.

The implementation starts in June and the project, that will take five to seven years, is to be carried out by the Croatian Construction and Environment Protection Ministry with the assistance of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).

The EU Environmental Fund has granted seven million dollars for this purpose.

The Croatian government will allocate 20 million dollars.

Commercial banks have been called to show interest in the project that will cover areas populated by about 60,000 people.
