Two Bosnian Croat parties announce unification

MOSTAR, May 12 (Hina) - The leaders of two Bosnian Croat parties -- the HDZ BiH (Croatian Democratic Union of Bosnia and Herzegovina) and the HDZ 1990 -- said they would work together after the secretary-general of Croatia's HDZ, Ivan Jarnjak, urged them at a meeting in Mostar on Friday evening to unite in the defence of the interests of the Croats in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

HDZ 1990 president Bozo Ljubic said that the two HDZ parties would work together in the interests of the Bosnian Croats.

"We in Bosnia and Herzegovina face a demanding time when constitutional changes will determine the fate of the Croat people in the next few decades. The HDZ BiH and the HDZ 1990 can work together to ensure equal status for the Croats in Bosnia and Herzegovina so that nothing can be imposed on us," Ljubic said.

It was the first time Ljubic had attended an HDZ BiH meeting since he left the party in 2006 to form the HDZ 1990.

Jarnjak said that the meeting showed that the process of unification of the HDZ 1990 and the HDZ Bih had already begun.

"The HDZ of the Republic of Croatia supports both parties in the unification. We are very eager to see the creation of the common HDZ in Bosnia and Herzegovina," Jarnjak said.

Jarnjak told reporters he had talked with the leaders of both parties and that there was a mutual desire for the unification of the HDZ BiH and the HDZ 1990.

Asked if Croatia was pushing for the unification of the two parties because of a forthcoming parliamentary election in Croatia, Jarnjak replied in the negative, saying that the Croatian HDZ had not yet started an election campaign.

Jarnjak was in Mostar for a formal dinner marking the 17th anniversary of foundation of the HDZ BiH.
