Croatian Television programmes director resigns

ZAGREB, April 25 (Hina) - The Croatian Television (HTV) programmes director, Tanja Simic, has tendered her resignation and the Croatian Radio and Television (HRT) Programmes Council will consider this at its session scheduled for Wednesday.

At its last session on 12 April, the HRT Programmes Council concluded that the HRT director should consider the accountability of the HTV programmes director Simic for failing to see to the protection of national interests, notably those regarding the 1990s Homeland War, and the highest professional and ethical principles during a "Piramida" show earlier in April.

At that session eight Council members unanimously concluded that, independently of everyone's right to state their opinion and of an editor's right to choose a show's guests, that "Piramida" show let hate speak and intolerance be used on HTV. The Council convened at the proposal of one of its members, Juro Njavro, after receiving numerous complaints from war veterans' associations over the participation of the leader of the Party of the Danube Region Serbs, Rade Leskovac, in "Piramida". Veterans were disgruntled with Leskovac's statements about the Homeland War and his spreading of hatred for everything Croatian.

The HRT Programmes Council chairman Zdenko Ljevak told Hina today that Tanja Simic's resignation was included in the working material for the session to be held later in the day.

The resignation was sent first to the HRT management that proceeded it to the Programmes Council.
