Sanader: Croatia and Romania have excellent relations

ZAGREB, April 13 (Hina) - Croatia and Romania have excellent relations, but should work on promoting economic cooperation, Croatian Prime Minister Ivo Sanader said on Friday.
ZAGREB, April 13 (Hina) - Croatia and Romania have excellent relations, but should work on promoting economic cooperation, Croatian Prime Minister Ivo Sanader said on Friday.

"We have agreed that we have brilliant relations and that they should be translated into the economy," Sanader told reporters after talks with Romanian Prime Minister Calin Popescu-Tariceanu in Zagreb.

The two prime ministers said they would urge their national carriers to introduce direct flights between Zagreb and Bucharest in an effort to boost trade between the two countries.

Sanader said that Croatian companies were interested in participating in major tenders in Romania, adding that his government would support Koncar's bid in a forthcoming tender for city trams in Bucharest.

"There's enough room for the further promotion of economic cooperation between our countries and I'm sure our good political relations will contribute to it," Popescu-Tariceanu said.

The two prime ministers also expressed their satisfaction with the signing of a declaration on the PEOP (Pan-European Oil Pipeline) project in Zagreb earlier this month.

Speaking of Euro-Atlantic integration processes, Sanader said that a NATO summit would most probably take place in Romania next year, where Croatia was expected to receive an invitation to join the alliance.

Popescu-Tariceanu said that if the summit took place in Romania he would be very happy for Croatia to receive a NATO membership invitation in his country. He stressed that Romania fully supported Croatia on its path to membership of the European Union and NATO.

"It's very important to stress that we support Croatia's EU entry as soon as possible and I'm happy to be able to note that you keep progressing in that direction and that you're getting closer to meeting the EU standards," the Romanian prime minister said.

"Romania's entry into the EU is a great encouragement to all of us who aspire to join this association which wants a peaceful, prosperous and safe Europe, a Europe of cooperation and not of conflict," Sanader said.

Popescu-Tariceanu is on a working visit to Croatia, and in the afternoon he is scheduled to attend a meeting of the Council of the European Liberal Democrat and Reform Party (ELDR).
