Mesic: Croatia and Montenegro will resolve all outstanding issues between them

ZAGREB, March 14 (Hina) - Croatia and Montenegro have good cooperation and will resolve all outstanding issues between them, and there is no reason to create unnecessary tensions over any issue, Croatian President Stjepan Mesic said in Zagreb on Wednesday when asked by reporters for a comment on the statement by Montenegrin Prime Minister Zeljko Sturanovic that no one could have promised Croatia that Montenegro would pay war reparations to it.

Mesic said there was a political will to settle this issue, but that "everyone is sensitive about the language being used."

The Croatian president recalled that the agriculture ministries of Croatia and Montenegro had reached an agreement for the compensation of damage for 840 head of cattle Yugoslav army forces had stolen in the Konavle area of southern Croatia during the 1990s war and that Montenegro had paid for the cattle.

He said that it had been found that equipment stolen from Dubrovnik airport had partly been installed at Montenegro's Tivat airport while the rest had been taken to Serbia. "Montenegrins are willing to settle this matter this way or that."

Commenting on a heated debate in the Montenegrin parliament on Tuesday when the leader of the People's Party called for the dismissal of Assembly chairman Ranko Krivokapic over his statement that Montenegro should pay war reparations to Croatia, Mesic said that the opposition always have the right to criticise, but that they should also take into account what is good for their country.

"I think it's useful for Montenegro to cooperate with Croatia and for Croatia to cooperate with Montenegro, but if someone doesn't understand that, it's another matter," Mesic said.
