Poland sees Croatia as most important partner in S-E Europe

ZAGREB, Feb 22 (Hina) - Croatia is Poland's most important partner in Southeast Europe and Warsaw strongly supports Zagreb's aspirations to join the European Union and NATO, Polish Foreign Minister Anna Fotyge said in Zagreb on Thursday after meeting her Croatian counterpart Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic.

I would like to emphasise Poland's unlimited support to Croatia's aspirations for membership of the European Union and NATO. Croatia is Poland's most important partner in the region, Fotyge told reporters, adding that Poland was willing to share with Croatia its experience from the process of accession to the EU.

Fotyge was on her first official visit to Croatia in the year in which the two countries were marking the 15th anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations.

The two ministers said that political and economic relations between Poland and Croatia were very good and that there were no outstanding issues between them. They, however, noted that there was room for boosting the cooperation, particularly in the economic sector.

The economic cooperation between Croatia and Poland is growing. Trade increased 33 per cent in the 2005/2006 period and the number of Polish tourists vacationing on the Croatian Adriatic coast rose 14 per cent last year, Grabar-Kitarovic said.

Croatia is interested in Poland's experience in the process of integration with the European Union, particularly in the use and implementation of EU pre-accession aid and in the use of cohesion and structural funds, she added.

The two ministers also discussed topics relating to global security and cooperation between the two countries within NATO and the NATO-lead ISAF mission in Afghanistan.

The Polish minister also met Parliament Speaker Vladimir Seks, and in the afternoon she was scheduled to meet President Stjepan Mesic.
