Reporters Without Borders says press freedom situation in Croatia satisfactory

ZAGREB, Feb 1 (Hina) - Reporters Without Borders on Thursday published its annual world press freedom survey, assessing that the governments in Western Europe and the US had a two-faced policy and did not do enough in practice to promote the freedoms they formally supported.
ZAGREB, Feb 1 (Hina) - Reporters Without Borders on Thursday published its annual world press freedom survey, assessing that the governments in Western Europe and the US had a two-faced policy and did not do enough in practice to promote the freedoms they formally supported.

The international organisation promoting media freedoms did not publish a separate report on Croatia, listing it among countries in which the press freedom situation was satisfactory, such as France, Italy, Spain, Poland and Serbia.

However, most European countries were listed as having a good press freedom situation, including Scandinavian, Baltic and Benelux countries, Germany, Great Britain, Slovenia, Hungary, and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The survey broke down countries into five groups, depending on whether the press freedom situation was good, satisfactory, with problems, difficult, or very difficult.

The survey, published on 1 February, reports on press freedom in 98 countries and includes the main violations of journalists" rights in 2006 and regional aspects of media and Internet freedom.

The report (in English, French, Spanish and Arabic) can be read at www.rsf.org and downloaded in its entirety or by region.
