KOTOR, Feb 20 (Hina) - Zagreb can help Croats in Montenegro financially as well as politically, Parliament Speaker Vladimir Seks said in Kotor on Tuesday after a meeting with representatives of the local Croat minority.

Speaking of assistance, Seks said that in the adoption of Montenegro's new Constitution Zagreb could push for the election of a member of the Croat minority to the state assembly as well as for providing financial support to Croat associations.

Seks said Croatian companies could also help, by employing Croats in their Montenegrin branches, and that Zagreb was also expected to assist in the construction of a Croatian House in Tivat and a Seamen Museum in Kotor.

According to the 2003 census, Montenegro has a Croat population of a little over 7,000.

Montenegrin Croats have a state-level party and are in the local government in Tivat and Kotor. Kotor's mayoress is a Croat, Maja Catovic.

In Cetinje, Seks held talks with Montenegrin President Filip Vujanovic, who thanked Croatia for having been among the first to recognise Montenegro's independence last year.

Montenegro wants Croatia to be its strategic partner in privatisation, infrastructure building and the construction of the Adriatic-Ionian Highway, said Vujanovic.

Seks advocated strengthening Zagreb-Podgorica parliamentary cooperation, notably in foreign relations.

He ended his two-day visit to Montenegro by meeting Kotor Catholic bishop Ilija Janjic.
