Croatian MPs for deploring Napolitano's language

ZAGREB, Feb 16 (Hina) - Several Croatian parliamentarians have proposed the establishment of an inter-party task force whose job will be to draw up, in cooperation with the Foreign Ministry, a statement on the Sabor's position on a recent speech made by Italian President Giorgio Napolitano at a commemoration of war victims which those MPs portrayed as unacceptable.

Independent member of parliament Slaven Letica on Friday raised the question about the Sabor's response to the 10 February speech made by Napolitano who said that the tragedy of Italians in Istria and Dalmatia in the wake of the Second World War was caused by "Slavic bloodthirsty hatred and fury".

Mato Arlovic of the Social Democratic Party proposed that Sabor very soon adopt a statement condemning the language of the Italian head of state. He added that the document should be an official position of Croatia before the Council of Europe and European Union institutions.

On Monday, Croatian President Stjepan Mesic hit back saying that Napolitano's speech contained traces of open racism, historical revisionism and political revenge-seeking.

Mesic's response, that was met with criticism by a EU spokeswoman and by Italian officials, has elicited support from various political parties and associations in Croatia.
