Government says Sanader, Prodi didn't personally talk about Croatia-Italy barb trading

ZAGREB, Feb 14 (Hina) - Croatian Prime Minister Ivo Sanader and his Italian counterpart Romano Prodi have not personally talked by telephone about the Italian-Croatian trading of accusations over foibe victims but their offices communicated as part of usual contacts, the Croatian government's Public Relations Office said on Wednesday.

The government reacted with a statement to "the incorrect information some Croatian media published in their reports on communication between the offices of the Croatian and Italian prime ministers".

"Contrary to claims that Prime Minister Sanader and Prime Minister Prodi personally talked by telephone, the Public Relations Office of the Republic of Croatia once again underlines that the offices of the two prime ministers communicated as part of usual contacts," said the statement.

On that occasion a proposal was made to Italy to reactivate the Croatian-Italian history commission to investigate crimes committed before, during and after World War Two, the statement said, adding that Sanader's office underlined that the Osimo and Rome Accords must be honoured, and that Croatia was ready to pay its debt to Italian WWII refugees in line with succession to the former Yugoslavia.

Both prime ministers' offices highlighted the joint interest to develop good neighbourly relations, without attempting to revise history, the statement said.

Foibe are deep caves where Yugoslav partisans dumped the bodies of Italians killed in Istria and Dalmatia between 1943 and 1945.
